Skin Prep

Skin Prep for Make up

All makeup that you see, on TV, film, fashion shows, and in magazines, all start the same. With skin prep. It's the foundation for everything you are about to apply to your face. When you work in film and television, it is probably the most important thing that you do. Especially since the invention of high definition THERE. IS. NO. HIDING. You can see every crack in those dry little lips and every fine line, that you worked so hard for.

Skin Prep doesn’t just apply to film and television. It should be the first step in everyone's process of everyday makeup. Not only does it make your skin look and feel lovely, it also helps your makeup do what its supposed to do.

We’ve all seen the little lovelies on Instagram with their lighting set up and their filters, well skin prep is like the real-life version of a filter. It softens, plumps and hydrates your skin and stops your make up from looking cakey and artificial.

Obviously, this means adding more products to your daily routine, which will take more time and cost more money. This is how I justify it. If you go to the salon and spend $300 on a new hairdo, you wouldn’t go home and use inexpensive shampoo and skip the conditioning process because you the cheaper ingredients will strip the color, and your hair will be dry and dull and harder for you to style. We've all made this mistake once or twice, but it's not worth it.

Now I'm not saying you need to spend thousands of dollars on products. There are amazing products in all price ranges and I use them all. I've always been a believer in using what works for you, not the most expensive or most trendy.

I thought the easiest way to show you my skin prep routine is to breakdown what I do for people. I don’t use every product, every time. But there  definitely have been days where I need them all.

Cleansing

The first step is always cleansing. I am as guilty as anyone for sometimes sleeping in my make up, so make sure you have a clean base to work with.

My favorite are

Mario Badescu Aloe and Rose toning spray

I have used this toning mist for over 10 years now. It keeps the skin moist and fresh and the rose and aloe have great healing properties. It closes the pores on your face so that you have an even surface to work with. I also spray my beauty blender with this instead of water. It's great to revive your makeup during the day. If your make up is looking a bit flat or dry, a few sprays of this will take you back to a more glowy, fresh look.

It dissolves make up and makes the skin feel fresh. I leave this one in the shower as part of my morning routine. It's also full of anti-aging ingredients which is never a bad thing!  www.itcosmetics.com

Bioderma Facial Wipes

These wipes are amazing if you're running out of time. They get rid of any leftover makeup and leave the skin full of moisture.   www.bioderma.com

Multi Miracle Glow by Charlotte Tilbury .

This is my favorite way to start my prep routine. It's full of amazing oils and vitamins to help with dryness and fine lines. You actually apply it to a dry face and massage it into the skin. You can leave it on for up to 10 minutes if you’ve got the time and then rinse with warm water. Your skin looks and feels like you have had a facial afterward.  www.charlottetilbury.com

Toning

Once the face is clean , I move onto skin toners and sprays. This is the best way to get rid of the last bit of residue and close all of the pores to get a smoother base before you apply makeup.

it cosmetics miracle water

This is a brand new favorite of mine. It is a cleansing miscellar water. There are lots on the market right now. Bioderma and Embrolyse are both great, but this once takes the cake. Not only does it cleanse, but it brightens, softens and makes your skin glow. And as with all of the cosmetic products listed, it has great anti-aging properties. I also love the way this makes your skin feel. Hydrated and awake. This happens to be one of Kort's favs:) www.itcosmetics.com

On press days with Kort, I give a few sprays in between interviews to keep her looking fresh and keep her awake for those early morning interviews - ha.

EYES

Eye Prep is One of my favorite steps. With all of the nourishing and de-puffing products out there these day, this can be one of your most noticeable steps to fresh eyes.  If there is time, I love started with a soothing eye pad. They only have to stay on 10 minutes but make your eyes look and feel fresh.

SkYN ICELAND Hydro Cool Firming Eye Gels

If we are traveling or shooting a lot, these little pads are a lovely treat. It's like giving your eyes a drink. They only have to stay on for 10 minutes but they give a shot of vitamins and moisture to your under eyes. When your eyes are nourished, concealer and foundation sits better on your skin and doesn’t fall into your little fine lines.

Benefit Puff off

I've tried every eye de-puffer on the market and I always go back to this one. It works so quickly, and the metal nozzle stays cold and feels so nice around your eyes. The cold always helps to shrink those bags even quicker and my clients still ask for this ball de-puffer on early morning shoots.

Confidence in an eye cream

For eyes that have a few more lines and wrinkles (like mine), I add a bit of eye cream. This softens and gives your tired eyes some lovely moisture.

Moisturizer

Moisturizer really depends on what look you are going for and what your skin needs. The lovely dewy look is very popular right now, but if your skin is oily you wouldn’t need to use one of these glowy moisturizers.

Embryolisse 24 hour miracle cream

I don't know a makeup artist that doesn’t have this in their kit. It's a great all-around moisturizer for all skin types, that also works as a makeup primer. It leaves the skin looking fresh and natural.

Limelight by Alcone Dew Date

This lovely oil-based moisturizer is amazing for dry skin and can ever be added into any other moisturizer as an extra shot of goodness. It leaves the skin really youthful looking.

It cosmetics  secret sauce radiance moisture

If your skin is a bit more mature or just tired and dry, this is your best friend. Some of the more heavy duty moisturizers can feel a bit heavy or sticky on the skin. Not this one! This is light and fluffy and absorbs straight into the skin.
