Their story looks a lot like destiny. Canadian-born and raised, Kortney Galerno (professional name, Kortney Kale) and Dave Wilson moved to Nashville in 1998, within two weeks of each other, to pursue solo careers in country music. A mutual friend and fellow Canadian, songwriter Deric Ruttan, offered them both a place to stay while they got on their feet, and it was at his farm that they met each other and a tight-knit community of singer-songwriters who shared their dreams and offered an invaluable network of support.
Shortly after arriving in Nashville, Kortney and Dave signed record deals with Lyric Street, Disney’s country label. And while the stars did not align for their solo projects, they did align for the couple, who fell in love, married, and now have three children, sons Jett and Sully, and daughter Lennox, who the couple adopted in 2007.
To make ends meet between record and publishing deals, Kortney and Dave were encouraged by a friend to start flipping houses. What started as occasional flips eventually led to full-blown, gut-to-the-studs renovations and their own hit HGTV show, Masters of Flip. For three seasons fans have watched Kortney and Dave, buy, renovate, and sell fixer-uppers in their own community of East Nashville. The couple has renovated over 100 houses to date, and one day hopes to help other homeowners do the same.
Masters of Flip was not the couple’s first foray into television, however. Shortly after their boys were born, they landed their own reality show on CMT called Meet the Wilsons, which spun off into The Wilsons Flip Out, where they balanced family with house flipping over eight episodes. Two seasons of a Saturday morning talk show, Kortney and Dave: By Request, followed, as did a record deal with Sony Canada, on which they released their first hit single as a couple, “Marry Me Again”, which Dave wrote as a surprise for Kortney and performed live in front of thousands at their first show together as “The Wilsons” in Northern Ontario.
With a thriving family and budding career in television, Kortney and Dave decided to cut ties with the music business and pursue real estate full time. Today, in addition to hosting Masters of Flip, Kortney is a licensed Realtor, who runs a successful team with Village Real Estate called Best Thing Ever Nashville, helping Tennesseans buy, sell, and occasionally flip, residential real estate. She also has her sights set on developing her own line of home décor products and furniture, in the not-so-distant future.
As their multi-faceted career evolves, Kortney and Dave are careful to carve out time for family. The couple currently homeschools two of their three children. And the five of them travel often. One of their favorite things to do while traveling is visit with and bring care packages to families in need. “I want my kids to see and experience as much as possible,” says Kortney. “And I also want them to understand the world outside of the bubble they live in.”
With musical theater being her first love, Kortney is proud to serve on the board of a local children’s theater company. Together the family stays active in their community, serving meals at family shelters and taking on projects to help the homeless. Dave loves nothing more than cheering for his boys’ hockey and soccer games and rollerblading with his daughter Lennox. He has also developed and mastered The 20-Minute Dad Clean (patent pending).
“If you can clean an entire house in twenty minutes, your wife will consider you a super hero,” explains Dave. “The singing and serenading, the house finding and flipping, all of that’s just icing on the cake as far as Kortney’s concerned. The real question is did you clean the toilets? If you can answer yes with a straight face, that’s the real victory.”
By that measure, and many others, Kortney and Dave Wilson are a winning couple for sure.
They are currently writing their first book, which will be published by Harper Collins in late 2018.
